The WhatsApp Envy: When Friends Back Home Seem Richer Than You

“But as for me, my feet had almost slipped… For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked… Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure.”

— Psalm 73:2-3, 13 (NIV)

The Scroll of Regret

You open WhatsApp or Instagram. You see a former classmate back home. They just built a massive house. They are posting pictures of their promotion, their weddings with 500 guests, their drivers, and their “soft life.”

Meanwhile, you are in the “Promised Land” of the West… shivering at a bus stop, calculating if you can afford meat this week, and exhausted from working two shifts.

The thought creeps in: Did I make a mistake?

We call it “The Diaspora Paradox.” You moved for a better life, but sometimes it looks like the people who stayed behind are living better than you. You traded your social status and comfort for “opportunity,” but right now, the opportunity looks like struggle, and their life looks like luxury.

The Highlight Reel vs. Your Behind-the-Scenes

Envy is a liar. It compares your blooper reel to their highlight reel.

You see their party photos; you don’t see the instability of the economy they live in. You see their big house; you don’t see the lack of medical infrastructure or safety.

Psalm 73 is the honest cry of someone who thinks they played by the rules and lost. “Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure.” But the Psalmist’s perspective only shifts when he enters the sanctuary of God (v. 17). He realizes that “things” are not the ultimate scorecard.

Your Lane, Your Race

God’s plan for you is not a copy-paste of your friend’s plan. Your journey required you to move; theirs required them to stay. Both paths have thorns; both paths have roses.

If you spend your energy looking sideways at their lane, you will trip in yours.

Be careful. Envy will blind you to the blessings you do have here: safety, stability, a different future for your children. Do not despise your own harvest just because your neighbour’s field looks different.

🛡️ The Diaspora Challenge

Action steps for your journey today.

  1. The Mute Button: If there is a specific person on social media whose posts constantly make you feel bad about your life, mute them for 30 days. It’s not malice; it’s mental hygiene.
  2. The Gratitude Audit: Write down 3 things you have in this country that money cannot buy (e.g., safety on the roads, clean air, reliable electricity).
  3. The Blessing: The next time you see a “success post” from back home, force yourself to type: “Congratulations! God is good.” Break the power of envy with the power of blessing.

🙏 A Prayer for Contentment

Lord, I confess I am looking over the fence. I feel jealous of the lives I see back home. I wonder if I made the wrong choice. Please silence the voice of comparison. Help me to trust the specific path You have written for me. Open my eyes to the blessings right in front of me so I can run my race with joy. Amen.
